On June 5, 2018, Palm Springs residents overwhelmingly voted NO on Measure C, agreeing to support short-term vacation rentals and continuing to welcome all tourists to our beautiful city.
Palm Springs has one of the strongest short term rental ordinances in the country. That, combined with stringent enforcement has been working well. If passed, this ballot measure would have taken away control from the City to regulate and enforce our vacation rental ordinance. The City would no longer receive the yearly $10 million in transit occupancy tax, sales tax, and fines and fees, which fund our vacation rental compliance department and free up our police to do important police work instead of responding to vacation rental complaints.
Tourism is the lifeblood of our Palm Springs economy, providing $200 million annually in economic impact and more than 1,200 jobs. Many of our residents, friends and neighbors, could have lost their jobs and livelihoods. Measure C would have erased the economic growth we have experienced over the last several years.
We all love Palm Springs. As Palm Springs voters have now agreed, slamming the door shut on our tourists, making it even harder for our workforce to make a living in Palm Springs, and cutting essential services for residents do not represent Palm Springs values.
All voters, for and against Measure C, made their voices heard on June 5. Let's now focus on moving forward together. We look forward to continuing to work with our staff, guests, homeowner partners, neighbors and organizations, and City staff and leadership to refine and improve the existing ordinance so that it helps facilitate a positive experience for everyone in Palm Springs.
